Subluxation Tuesday

IHealth frenzie

Thanksgiving is over, so let the shopping stress begin!  Millions of people worldwide will spend the next several weeks in a buying frenzy – determined to secure the perfect gift for a rock bottom price, all while sacrificing their health and their sanity in the process.

According to a 2006 Greenburg Quinlin Rosner Research survey ‘people in the United States are more likely to feel their stress increases rather than decreases during the holidays’ citing, ‘the holidays can be a hectic time for many, and a lack of money, a lack of time, and the hype and commercialism’ is the cause of it all.  No doubt the self induced stress of Black Friday and Cyber Monday can lead to Subluxation Tuesday.

The antidote – Don’t stress over finding the right present; instead, try BEING present.  The greatest gift of all is the innate intelligence within you and a stress free nerve system to express it.  Don’t let this year’s must have item steal your peace and healthiness.  Get adjusted, get your power turned on and focus on the real reason for the season.

Subluxations Don’t Take Vacations

get adjusted sand

Toes in the sand, not a cloud in the sky, 75 degree water temps.  Vacations are the perfect time to decompress, spend precious time with family and friends and reconnect with your soul.  What could possibly stress your body?

How about ten days of sleep on a mushy mattress?  Or two hours of novice water skiing / body dragging lessons.  Not to mention the bottomless Mojito’s and obligatory trips to the dessert buffet… and don’t forget nursing that nasty sunburn from day three.   Unfortunately, stress doesn’t take time off.  The scenery may change, but your nerve system is still hard at work – reacting and adapting to those “relaxing” shifts in routine.  It’s a prime opportunity to become Subluxated.

If you’ve been away from the office for a while, we hope you’re well rested.  But now it’s time to get back on track and into a healthy regimen; especially getting your spine checked and cleared of Subluxations.  When you need to recover from vacation – put Chiropractic on top of your itinerary.

SUBLUXATION: The Physical Component

Of the 3 causes of subluxations, physical, chemical, and emotional, most would consider the physical causes to be pretty transparent.  After all, you don’t slip and fall and not know it.

But while physical triggers certainly consist of falls, auto accidents, sporting injuries, and so forth, the majority of us are more often affected by lesser considered, but much more prevalent causes.  Things such as sleeping positions, the way we habitually sit, slouching, carrying purses and backpacks, occupational activities, etc.

slip-and-fall-image

Day after day of the same repetitive actions and movements eventually changes the physical balance of the body, often resulting in the development of subluxations.  Let’s face it, if you are living any sort of physical lifestyle whatsoever, your spine is bound to end up with subluxations at some point.

So what’s a person to do?  There are positive steps that you can implement to minimize the physical strain on your body and to help increase the effectiveness of your adjustments.

First, positive, structured physical activity is a must on a daily basis.  Strength training and cardiovascular fitness can help counteract the negative forces that we inevitably place on our bodies every single day.  And no, getting in and out of your car between sales trips does not constitute adequate exercise.  Invest the time to take care of your physical health properly; it will pay huge dividends for years to come.

Secondly, it is extremely important that we pay strict attention to our posture.  Keep in mind that the spine should be straight up and down from the front or back and should have 3 natural curves when viewed from the side.  Your goal should be to maintain that posture as much as possible at all times.

This means that we need to continually be aware of how we are sitting, sleeping, lifting, driving, standing, etc.

Every physical activity you engage in has an impact on your body, and most of that impact is absorbed by the spinal column.  If we are not doing our absolute best to maintain the spine, its natural tendency is to break down.

If you have any questions regarding how to properly implement an exercise plan or how to overcome incorrect postural habits, please let us know so that we can work with you to get you your absolute healthiest.

Remember that only a specific chiropractic adjustment can correct a spinal subluxation, but putting some simple action steps into play can not only complement your chiropractic care, but also increase the resilience of your physical body.

Sneak Attack

Were you surprised at the extent of spinal instability or damage identified on your examination?  Most people are.

The concept of a subluxation is simple enough; a few spinal bones become misaligned and squeeze the spinal nerves which results in pain or impaired function. The simplicity of the subluxation, however, belies the fact that there is quite a complex process taking place underneath the surface.

Many people wonder how they could have so many subluxations and never even know it, especially in the absence of any obvious accident or injury.

For starters, most of the nerve roots that branch off the spinal column don’t cause any pain or outward symptoms.  Instead, they are motor nerves that run your organs, give power to your muscles, rebuild cells, etc. Think of them like the wires running from your circuit panel to your television or refrigerator.  When a bone shifts onto a nerve, just like flipping a switch, it shuts down the power to its organ or body part.  Since there are far more motor nerves affected than pain receptors, most subluxations initially occur without your knowledge, and in fact, can be quite long lived before any symptoms surface.

Secondly, subluxations more often result from the culmination of routine daily activities than from one catastrophic accident or event.

subluxation

Postural habits, lifting, repetitive strains, sleep positions, etc. can cause damaging shifts in the spine without any warning whatsoever.  In other words, subluxations can result from the stresses of normal daily living without you realizing it.

Finally, when symptoms do occur, they usually creep up on us rather than become full blown all at once.  When symptoms slowly escalate over a long period, the body has time to adapt.  So what might be regarded as severe pain had it come on suddenly can seem moderate or even mild in comparison when it slowly ramps up in intensity.  The end result, however, is no less devastating to your spine and your health.

When most people think of a subluxation and a pinched spinal nerve, they envision immediate symptoms such as sharp, shooting pain, burning, or numbness.  But as you can see, while these sensations certainly do result from subluxations, usually they take some time to express themselves.

Since subluxations can go undetected under the surface for months or years at a time, the moral of the story is to have your spine checked for subluxations long before symptoms become apparent.  The only way to know for sure whether or not you have subluxations is by getting a chiropractic check-up.

One Weak Link

Just as one damaged link can weaken an entire chain, a single subluxated bone in the spinal column can cause widespread damage throughout the body.  Not only will a subluxation affect your body’s nerve supply, but it can also lead to chronic structural damage to the spine.

The neurological impact of a subluxation can be devastating.  When nerve flow is choked off from the brain to the body, tissues and organs malfunction and the body breaks down from the inside. If the signal in any of the nerve circuits through the spine is diminished, the body part that it gives life to suffers.  And since the whole body must function in concert to be at its healthiest, one sick or diseased organ weakens the entire body.

If you are under the impression that a single subluxation is no big deal, ask yourself which organ you can afford to damage.

To make matters worse, a single subluxation left uncorrected rarely remains a single subluxation.  When the body is weakened by one subluxation, the potential for developing others increases dramatically, as your body is always working to maintain balance. Imagine you have a stack of building blocks.  If you tilt one block to the side, all of the blocks above it will lean that way as well. In order to overcome the imbalance, one of the leaning blocks will have to be tilted back in the opposite direction.  This is how one subluxation can spawn others.

In addition to impaired nerve function, the structural imbalance resulting from subluxations accelerates spinal decay.  Bone spurs or calcium deposits result from weaknesses created by subluxations. The degeneration is your body’s attempt to strengthen a weakened spine.  It’s like building up a callous on irritated skin.

Broken-LinkRemember also that the discs are affected by the bones that surround them.  When vertebra tilt to the side they squeeze the disc between them and can cause it to become weak and brittle, bulge, or even herniate.  So what started as one subluxation can end up as a degenerated spine.

Like so many things in life, a poor quality of health is the end result of several little factors that compound upon one another.  Address them early on while they are still small and the problem becomes much more manageable.  Wait until a single problem has grown into a full scale crisis, and you’ve got a much larger battle on your hands.  It is much easier to correct a single subluxation than it is to eventually try to overcome the resultant nerve irritation, spinal decay, and disc degeneration. Like routine dental visits, regular spinal check-ups can prevent a simple fix from growing into something much more serious.

Protect Your Investment!

Buying an automobile is probably one of the biggest financial investments you’ll make.  When you consider all the hard work that went into your purchase I’m sure you would agree that it only makes sense to protect your investment so that you get as much return on it as possible.  You understand that even though your car runs great, performs magnificently, and looks wonderful on the outside it is imperative that you keep up with regularly scheduled maintenance to keep it running smoothly.  Routine oil changes are essential to the life of your car’s engine.  It would be foolish to sink tens of thousands of dollars into a new vehicle only to neglect the maintenance and drive it to an early grave.

Restoring your health through chiropractic requires an investment of both your time and money, and is truly one of the best investments you can make for yourself.  If you have completed, or are in the process of following through with a schedule of comprehensive chiropractic care, then congratulations on your commitment to excellent health!  However, to remain at the pinnacle you worked so hard to achieve it is essential to incorporate chiropractic wellness care into your lifestyle.

Once you have completed a corrective or comprehensive care plan it is important to follow up with routine visits to maintain your newfound level of health.  After all, if it was worth the investment to regain your health, then you owe it to yourself to maintain it.

10-serious-mistakes-car-maintenance-1The key is to remain proactive and to stay one step ahead of potential problems before they have a chance to develop.  It is far less costly to take your car to the mechanic for routine maintenance work than it is to wait for a breakdown.

Keep in mind, however, that even with routine automotive maintenance there is still the potential to develop trouble between service appointments.  When the warning lights on your dash alert you to a problem, it is best to get it checked right away rather than wait until your next scheduled service.

The same goes for your body.  When pain or injuries occur between wellness visits, resist the temptation to hold out until your next scheduled visit.  If your body is talking to you, listen to it.  The sooner a problem is addressed, the easier and more cost effective it is to get you over it.

Your body is meant to last you a lifetime.  It is not leased and there is no trading it in.  Isn’t it time you started caring for your body as well as you treat your car?  Just like oil changes, fuel line flushes, and tire rotations, wellness visits will keep you running strong for a lifetime!

Are you Stuck in First Gear?

Imagine you are driving down the road with your gas pedal to the floor.  Your car runs great and gets you to where you need to be.  All is good.

But then you look around and notice that everyone else is whizzing right by you.

Determined to keep up with those around you, you take your car into the shop and have the mechanic give it a good once-over.  The mechanic finds that while you have been getting to where you need to be, you have been doing so while driving in only one gear.  In actuality, he discovers that your car has an entire set of gears that have never even been utilized!

Many people live out their lives the same way; stuck in first gear and never living up to their potential;  not quite hurting, but definitely not at their best.  The problem is that while most people realize they simply are not living up to par, they don’t know how to access their hidden gearbox to take their health to the next level.

These are the people that need to be under chiropractic care!

The old misconception that chiropractic care is just for those in pain or battling symptoms is quickly being exposed for the fallacy that it is.

Those who get the most out of their chiropractic adjustments are the ones who take their care beyond the relief phase and work with their chiropractor to maintain lifelong health and wellness.

The true essence of chiropractic actually has nothing to do with the treatment of pain and symptoms.  Chiropractic adjustments remove nervous system interference by correcting mis-alignments in the spine called vertebral subluxations.  Symptoms are relieved as a byproduct of building a healthier body.

A subluxated spine, one that is continually out of balance, will never allow the body to run at maximum speed and efficiency.  The subluxation in effect acts as a governor on your body’s engine, limiting it to a certain speed that it can’t rise above.

You are not designed to sputter through life in first gear.  You are created to live all out at full throttle.  Settle for any less and you not only short-change yourself, but also those who depend upon you.

Your nervous system is housing a whole new set of gears that most of us never even tap into.  By unleashing the full scope of your body’s innate potential, chiropractic can help you take your health and your life to unparalleled heights!
