Tune In To Health

Remember the days of rabbit ear antennas on your television sets? If you were lucky enough to find the exact seating position in your living room to optimize your body’s own magnetic field and the tilt of the earth’s axis, these beauties could tune in your favorite show with the crystal clarity of a thick San Francisco fog.  If – heaven forbid – you wanted to tune to another channel, this required a coordinated, 2 handed effort of spinning and rotating the antennas, the likes of which would rival even the most skilled of Olympic fencers.

rabbit ears TVThe point here is that no matter what show you wanted to watch, you could pick it up on your set, but only if the antenna was functioning properly and only if it was aligned in the right position.  The signal was always in the air, but whether or not your show came in clearly depended upon the antenna’s ability to transfer the signal to your TV set.

For those of you struggling with your health, keep in mind that you always have the potential for improvement.  Your body was created by an intelligence that is unerring, infallible, and always on the job, and this intelligence is expressed through the body’s nervous system.

Research shows that most health disorders can ultimately be traced back to a breakdown somewhere in the nervous system.  However, the problem is usually not with the nerve supply itself, but rather with the transmission of nerve energy through the body.  Just like the old VHF signals being broadcast over the air, the nerve energy is always present; the signal is always there.  Remaining healthy is a matter of transferring that signal as efficiently as possible to all parts of your body, and in this case your spine functions as the antenna.  The farther out of alignment your spine becomes, the weaker the signal gets. Bringing the spine back into its proper positioning allows for the signal to broadcast at full strength.

Misaligned spinal bones choke off vital nerve impulses from the brain to the body, but instead of a fuzzy picture, you get sciatic pain, headaches, asthma, fatigue, numbness, digestive disorders, allergies, chronic sickness, etc.

Chiropractic works by enhancing the signals being broadcast by your body and laying the ground for optimum expression of health from the inside out.  Clearing the spine of subluxated vertebra allows the free flow of energy from your brain through the spinal cord and into your cells, organs and tissues, resulting in crystal clear, HD reception and picture-perfect health.

One Weak Link

Just as one damaged link can weaken an entire chain, a single subluxated bone in the spinal column can cause widespread damage throughout the body.  Not only will a subluxation affect your body’s nerve supply, but it can also lead to chronic structural damage to the spine.

The neurological impact of a subluxation can be devastating.  When nerve flow is choked off from the brain to the body, tissues and organs malfunction and the body breaks down from the inside. If the signal in any of the nerve circuits through the spine is diminished, the body part that it gives life to suffers.  And since the whole body must function in concert to be at its healthiest, one sick or diseased organ weakens the entire body.

If you are under the impression that a single subluxation is no big deal, ask yourself which organ you can afford to damage.

To make matters worse, a single subluxation left uncorrected rarely remains a single subluxation.  When the body is weakened by one subluxation, the potential for developing others increases dramatically, as your body is always working to maintain balance. Imagine you have a stack of building blocks.  If you tilt one block to the side, all of the blocks above it will lean that way as well. In order to overcome the imbalance, one of the leaning blocks will have to be tilted back in the opposite direction.  This is how one subluxation can spawn others.

In addition to impaired nerve function, the structural imbalance resulting from subluxations accelerates spinal decay.  Bone spurs or calcium deposits result from weaknesses created by subluxations. The degeneration is your body’s attempt to strengthen a weakened spine.  It’s like building up a callous on irritated skin.

Broken-LinkRemember also that the discs are affected by the bones that surround them.  When vertebra tilt to the side they squeeze the disc between them and can cause it to become weak and brittle, bulge, or even herniate.  So what started as one subluxation can end up as a degenerated spine.

Like so many things in life, a poor quality of health is the end result of several little factors that compound upon one another.  Address them early on while they are still small and the problem becomes much more manageable.  Wait until a single problem has grown into a full scale crisis, and you’ve got a much larger battle on your hands.  It is much easier to correct a single subluxation than it is to eventually try to overcome the resultant nerve irritation, spinal decay, and disc degeneration. Like routine dental visits, regular spinal check-ups can prevent a simple fix from growing into something much more serious.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

To understand how chiropractic works, you only need to look at the basic structure of the human body.

Let’s start at the beginning.  When we are developing from the union of 2 microscopic cells, the first thing to form is what will eventually be recognized as the brain, followed by the spinal cord.  Thus, the central nervous system is set in place before any of the other organs and tissues.

Your Nervous SystemThe brain and spinal cord are first to develop for a reason.  If you have even the most elementary understanding of the human body, you recognize that the brain runs the whole show.  In order for any of the other organs to develop properly and function in unison, they need to be fed and orchestrated by the nervous system.

Think about it.  Without a nerve supply your heart doesn’t beat, your stomach doesn’t digest, and your lungs don’t process air.  To put it more bluntly, you die without your nerve supply.

But now let’s say that we don’t take your nerve supply away, but instead we dampen it down a bit, like softening the lights with a dimmer switch.  You still have most of your nerve supply, so you don’t die; but you certainly don’t fully live either.

This is exactly what happens when the bones in your spine become misaligned, or what chiropractors call subluxated.  You see, in order for those nerve messages to get from the brain into the heart, lungs, and other organs, they are transported down the spinal cord and then out through the nerves that exit the spinal column between the vertebra.  From there they continue on to the specific organ or tissue.

When the spine is in its proper alignment nerve impulses are conveyed in their full capacity, allowing the body to function at its peak.

Subluxations (misaligned spinal bones) choke off vital nerve impulses by “pinching” on spinal nerves, resulting in decreased nerve flow and compromised health.

Chiropractic adjustments correct misaligned vertebra, allowing the body to return to its balanced state, heal from the inside out, and express 100% life.  Block the nervous system and the body breaks down.  Free up pinched nerves and health returns.  It’s that simple.

Many of the conditions and symptoms that people treat endlessly with medications would be better addressed by a chiropractor.

Life on a Dimmer Switch

The central nervous system is unbelievably complex.  The amount of information processed by the brain and spinal cord every second is mind boggling.  Not only do they constantly monitor sensory input, control motor function, coordinate tissue repair, and essentially place your body’s organs on autopilot, but at their very essence they serve to maintain the life impulse that sustains us.

Dimmer SwitchSince the nervous system transmits electrical impulses, the easiest way to conceptualize it is to think of it as a hardwired electrical circuit.

Using this analogy, the brain could be thought of as the generator or power plant.  The spinal column is like a conduit carrying the main trunk line of the spinal cord, and the spinal nerves are like smaller wires branching off the trunk line to various appliances, or in this case, cells, tissues, and organs.

The key to maintaining optimal health is to keep the power plant functioning at full throttle and keeping the circuit clear for it to distribute its signal.  When everything is in sync and working at full power, the body can’t help but be healthy.  When the system starts breaking down, so does the body.

The most common cause of nervous system interference, or a breakdown in the electrical system, is a vertebral subluxation.

Each vertebra has a large central hole through which the spinal cord passes and a smaller notch on the side to allow for the spinal nerve to exit.  When all the bones are aligned perfectly on top of one another, the larger holes form a smooth tube for the spinal cord and the notches form small holes for the nerves that branch off the cord.  When one or more bones shift out of position, pressure on the spinal nerves can result, dropping the power like a dimmer switch.  The more pressure on the nerve, the weaker its signal.

If you have been struggling with your health, there is a good chance that your electrical system has been dimmed by subluxations.

When you consider that every cell in your body is supplied its life force from the nervous system, which of your circuits could you afford to have put on a dimmer?  The one going to your heart?  How about your lungs or your stomach?

To be at your absolute healthiest, we simply need to maximize the output from our power source and then make sure that all our circuits are clear to relay their message at full capacity.

Chiropractic keeps your innate spine subluxation-free and your innate power amped up!

Commit…Then Follow Through

Let’s get right to the point.  There is no magic bullet, the easy way out is the wrong way, and quick fixes never stand the test of time.  We all know this to be true yet, astoundingly, we have been led to believe the exact opposite when it comes to our health and well-being.  Medicine has become our magic elixir, our get-out-of-jail-free card.  Why exercise your bones and joints when you can pop a pill instead?  Sure you risk abdominal cramping and bone death, but at least you don’t have to get off the couch.  Hair loss, obesity, short temper, shyness, itchy skin, dry eyes…  You can bet that whatever ails you, no matter how trivial, there is a pill marketed for it.

The reason chiropractic continues to thrive, even at times in the face of fierce opposition, is because it is built on solid, lasting principles.

The health of your body is in direct proportion to the health of your nervous system.  The body heals from the inside-out.  Nerve impulses travel from the brain, through the spinal cord, and are distributed from there into the body through the spinal nerves.  There is no disputing the fact that this is how the body works.

How then is a heart that is lacking nerve supply to benefit from popping pills?  Taking migraine medicine for a headache requires that your body not only fight the cause of the migraine, but now also the dangerous chemicals you are dumping into it.  We have essentially been trained to put out a fire by dousing it with gasoline.   We have been led to believe that the work that the body has been accomplishing over thousands of years with amazing efficiency is suddenly no longer possible in the absence of drugs.

As much as we tend to overcomplicate it, staying healthy is really pretty simple.  Getting well simply requires that we optimize the function of the nervous system and then maintain its integrity and allow the body to do what it was created to do.  The reason that so many of us struggle with our health is because as simple as the concept is, actually following through requires a high level of commitment and necessitates specific action steps on a daily basis.  Everyone knows the formula for losing weight is to cut out the bad calories, watch your portions, and exercise daily, but few people can commit to following through.  It’s easier to look for the pill that requires no work output or the exercise video that promises miracles after 2 weeks, or to simply give into temptation.

Your body is a masterpiece and it requires consistent attention and respect.  If you’re ready to make the commitment to getting well – not just feeling better through artificial means, but truly getting well – then welcome aboard!  We’ll do everything we can to help you get there.
