Tune In To Health

Remember the days of rabbit ear antennas on your television sets? If you were lucky enough to find the exact seating position in your living room to optimize your body’s own magnetic field and the tilt of the earth’s axis, these beauties could tune in your favorite show with the crystal clarity of a thick San Francisco fog.  If – heaven forbid – you wanted to tune to another channel, this required a coordinated, 2 handed effort of spinning and rotating the antennas, the likes of which would rival even the most skilled of Olympic fencers.

rabbit ears TVThe point here is that no matter what show you wanted to watch, you could pick it up on your set, but only if the antenna was functioning properly and only if it was aligned in the right position.  The signal was always in the air, but whether or not your show came in clearly depended upon the antenna’s ability to transfer the signal to your TV set.

For those of you struggling with your health, keep in mind that you always have the potential for improvement.  Your body was created by an intelligence that is unerring, infallible, and always on the job, and this intelligence is expressed through the body’s nervous system.

Research shows that most health disorders can ultimately be traced back to a breakdown somewhere in the nervous system.  However, the problem is usually not with the nerve supply itself, but rather with the transmission of nerve energy through the body.  Just like the old VHF signals being broadcast over the air, the nerve energy is always present; the signal is always there.  Remaining healthy is a matter of transferring that signal as efficiently as possible to all parts of your body, and in this case your spine functions as the antenna.  The farther out of alignment your spine becomes, the weaker the signal gets. Bringing the spine back into its proper positioning allows for the signal to broadcast at full strength.

Misaligned spinal bones choke off vital nerve impulses from the brain to the body, but instead of a fuzzy picture, you get sciatic pain, headaches, asthma, fatigue, numbness, digestive disorders, allergies, chronic sickness, etc.

Chiropractic works by enhancing the signals being broadcast by your body and laying the ground for optimum expression of health from the inside out.  Clearing the spine of subluxated vertebra allows the free flow of energy from your brain through the spinal cord and into your cells, organs and tissues, resulting in crystal clear, HD reception and picture-perfect health.

Subluxation: The Emotional Component

Probably the least understood and most overlooked aspect of the subluxation is its emotional component.  While physical strain is often repetitive, and chemical exposure can certainly be prolonged, the emotional trigger for subluxations is especially pervasive and destructive.   Chronic stress, worry, and anxiety leads to emotional overload and will compound the physical and chemical causes of subluxation as well.
Behind the Emotional Component

Back when life was a little simpler and we didn’t have so many demands on our time and resources, the body’s stress mechanism was not so abused.  Our stress hormones govern the classic “fight or flight” mechanism in our bodies and fuel the survival instinct.  Imagine that you are faced with a life or death situation.  Your body’s internal alarm system triggers the adrenal glands to release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol which results in, among other things, increased heart rate and respiration, and an enhanced reaction time.  In the short term this process is essential for survival. But like having your accelerator stuck to the floor, it will lead to emotional burnout in the long run.

When your body is working in harmony, the fight or flight reaction is balanced by a calming response controlled by a certain part of the nervous system.  If you live in a chronically stressed state, either your environment is so demanding that you are physically unable to return to a relaxed state, or your nervous system is stuck in high gear.  Whichever the case, positive steps can be taken to reestablish a healthy balance within the body.

Diminishing the effects of stress on your body requires a two-pronged approach.

First, get adjusted!  Chiropractic adjustments correct spinal misalignments and allow the nervous system to bring the body back into balance.  A healthy nervous system is able to take a body stuck in overdrive and shift it back down to a healthy idle.  The body can only work in complete harmony when the nervous system is free of interference.

Secondly, while it is impossible to eliminate stress from your life, there is much that can be done to minimize its negative effects.

Get into the habit of taking some quiet time for yourself on a daily basis.  Just half an hour per day can go a long way to bringing some calm into a hectic life.  Combining this time with physical exercise will compound its beneficial effects.  For example, you might engage in some positive visualization while taking a brisk walk.

If left unaddressed, stress and subluxations can certainly feed off of one another.  But by taking simple action steps you can neutralize their effects and continue to maintain outrageous health!

Great Taste….and So Much More!

One of the best things you can do for your body is to feed it real, wholesome, nutritious foods.  If you can find locally grown organic products, even better.  The benefits of going organic include less pesticide contamination, higher nutrient content, no genetic modifications, no irradiation, more humane treatment of animals and respect for the land, and better taste.  Of all these health benefits, the only subjective one is taste.

So let’s say you are looking over some produce and you are deciding whether to go organic or stick with the conventional version.  If your primary concern is the health of you and your family, then it’s a no-brainer; go with the organic.  If, however, your decision is based solely on taste, it’s a toss up, as some report a distinct advantage to organic while others claim no taste difference between organic and conventional.

Here’s the point.  If you are making your purchasing decisions based entirely on taste, you are risking missing out on all the other healthy benefits of choosing organic.

When it comes to chiropractic and the health of your body, pain relief is like the organic taste test.

While most people are prompted to pursue chiropractic care as the result of pain or other symptoms, those who limit it to simple pain relief are cheating themselves of so much more.

The real impact of chiropractic lies in its ability to help the body heal and regulate itself from the inside out.  We know that life is housed within the central nervous system, and that spinal misalignments shut down life from the brain to the body.   Whethersubluxations are felt or not, the end result is the same: loss of nerve flow and compromised health.

Roughly 15-20% of the time these spinal imbalances result in pain.  Most of the time, however, they cause no symptoms and go undetected.  So if the majority of people who are subluxated, choking off nerve flow, and losing life from the brain down, base their decision to choose chiropractic solely on the way they feel, then they will most likely delay care, and their health will continue to decline. Organic is not just about taste, and chiropractic certainly isn’t only about pain relief.

While feeling great is desirable, the full scope of chiropractic’s benefits can only be realized beyond the initial relief phase of care.  Once you are feeling better, be sure to utilize chiropractic for ongoing health and wellness.  Pain relief, like great taste, is just the tip of the iceberg!

Are You Living, or Just Alive?

Life is described as many things by different people, but one thing it can never be defined as is stagnant. Life is always changing, evolving, increasing, or decreasing in capacity.  It is in a constant state of flux. While you are sitting there seemingly doing nothing, your body is always on the job building and repairing tissue, creating new cells, growing hair and nails, digesting food, etc.

The degree to which your body is able to do these things depends primarily upon the health and vibrancy of your nervous system.  There are certainly other factors that come into play such as a proper supply of nutrients and adequate rest, but even their potency is diminished when shackled by a weakened nerve supply.

Living or just AliveLife originates in the brain and nervous system and emanates outward through the body’s nerve pathways into all of your cells and tissues.  All other variables being equal, the body is at its healthiest when the nerve system is free to express all of its vital signals clearly without any interference. When nerve impulses are pinched off by spinal misalignments, or subluxations, your quality of life diminishes.  Think of it as a dimmer switch controlling a light.  The more pressure on the nerve, the less life gets through. It is not necessarily safe to assume that you are at your healthiest, or to put it another way, at your most alive, simply because you are living, breathing, and exhibiting no obvious pain or symptoms.

A key point to remember is that only a small percentage of the nervous system expresses pain.  So while your level of health may seem completely stable on the outside, in actuality it can be fluctuating under the surface.  A cavity quickly becomes a very painful toothache when the nerve is exposed, but the process leading up that point can take months, or even years. Nobody would argue thatall the while the tooth was unhealthy under the surface even in the absence of symptoms. To ensure that your body remains at its healthiest, it is essential to maintain a strong, optimally functioning nervous system and to continually supply your body with the power that it needs to thrive.  To merely be symptom-free is not enough.

While many people associate chiropractic with pain relief, the true essence of the chiropractic adjustment is to turn on the life force within the body and then to keep it burning brightly for a lifetime .

Illness or Natural Reaction?

If you inadvertently swallow something toxic and you call the poison control center they will most likely tell you to induce vomiting right away.

If you have ever experienced food poisoning you are well acquainted with the marathon of diarrhea and vomiting that often accompanies it.

Breathe in noxious vapors and you will undoubtedly begin coughing or sneezing.  Exposure to caustic gases will cause your eyes to water.

Coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting, diarrhea.  These are all natural reactions that are designed to rid the body of foreign substances or irritants and maintain a healthy state of balance.

When you are “sick” your body reacts the way it does for a reason.  If you are infected with a bacteria or virus, the body brilliantly raises its core temperature to burn up the invader.  When the infection is eliminated your body temperature normalizes again.  You are sick with an infection, you are not sick with a fever.  Treating the fever does not address the infection.

In a similar way, vomiting and diarrhea, as unpleasant as they may be, serve a useful purpose in eliminating toxins from the body.  Without these essential survival mechanisms, we would risk dying at the first exposure to poisoning.  If you allow the body to work, the poisons are expelled.  If you suppress the body’s natural response, the poison remains.

Coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting, diarrhea are all natural reactions that are designed to rid the body of irritants.

Coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting, diarrhea are all natural reactions that are designed to rid the body of irritants.

If you were brought up in a “traditional” household, you were raised with an abundance of pills, syrups, and lotions whose sole purpose is to prevent the body from expressing itself.  We are increasingly encouraged to develop a dependence on manmade drugs and led to believe that the body is in a state of lack without them.

Surely the human body that fully developed from 2 microscopic cells, is powered by an innate wisdom, is self-healing, self-regulating, and self-replicating, is not sufficiently intelligent or powerful enough on its own to fend off a tiny, single-celled organism.  Cue drug of choice here.

Traditional medicine is largely built upon treating symptoms.  This is ineffective in that it does not address the underlying cause, but it can also be harmful to the body by counteracting natural bodily reactions designed to sustain life. Sometimes a symptom is not so much a symptom as it is a natural response or reaction.

To be at our absolute healthiest, we must minimize our reliance on drugs and instead rediscover our faith in the human body, trust in its innate wisdom, and work to build and support its natural balance.  A truly healthy body is always built from the inside out.
