Squat Like a Toddler

Toddler Squat

If you ever want to observe perfect biomechanics, watch a toddler pick up a toy from the floor.  You’ll never see them bending over, moaning in agony like an old man.  They drop their hips, maintain a perfect center of gravity while lowering themselves, then pop right back up with the ease of an Olympic lifter.

Interestingly enough, they never attended an ‘ergonomics’ class to acquire such perfect form.  Their little bodies are innately designed to do it – and at one time in your life, your body worked like that too.  You were able to lift, bend, sit, walk, run, sleep and with perfect, innate biomechanics.  But somewhere along the way, your body picked up bad habits and
compensated movements that now create pain and physical limitations in your daily Life.

If PAIN is your body forgetting how to line up and move the way it was originally designed to, HEALTH is the return to the original blueprint.  If you want to get your Life back, remind your body how it was meant to function.  Sounds like the perfect job for a Chiropractor.

Is This IN-dependence

Pill Flag

In a recent Mayo Clinic study, researchers determined that nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half receive at least two prescriptions. Twenty percent of U.S. patients were also found to be on five or more prescription medications. When it comes to health, Americans aren’t as free as we think we are.

Chiropractors believe true freedom comes from IN-Dependence – relying on the Power that made you, to heal you and keep you well. IN-dependent Chiropractic patients know they innately possess what it takes to heal. They trust in the wisdom of their bodies to handle what ails them instead of running to the medicine cabinet for every cough or sniffle. They‘re the 30% who would rather give Mother Nature the chance to do her job, than usurp her role with drug intervention.

Big Pharma won’t stop advertising and pushing their products until we’re 100% dependent on them. This Fourth of July when you’re celebrating our country’s freedom, take a moment to reflect on your body’s freedom as well. Are you truly as IN-dependent as you want to be?

Don’t Let the Needle Get to E

Spinal Gas Gauge

I’m forever reminding my spouse (with total love of course), ‘…honey, don’t let the gas gauge get to E.  Fill up when it hits a quarter left because you don’t want to run out of fuel when you need it the most – like when on the highway with a car full of kids.

Likewise, you don’t want to let your ‘Chiropractic gas needle’ get to E before you come in for an adjustment.  Some patients feel then can go several weeks or months without an adjustment because they’re cruising along, just feeling fine.  And it’s true.  Based on your health, lifestyle and activity levels adjustments can hold for a while – but not forever.  Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10 patients who fail to gauge their adjustments properly, show up with some ache or pain as a reminder they’ve waited too long.  And that’s not how maintenance care works.

Maintaining a healthy spine is a proactive decision… something you do regularly not based on how you feel, but based on what you need to stay on the road of Life.  The next time you wait too long for your next adjustment and experience
the hurt, consider filling your Chiropractic tank WAY before it gets seriously low again.

Gain Motion – Lose Pain

Motion Pain Scale

There’s an old adage that says “…if you don’t use it, you lose it.”  Nothing could be more true when it comes to inactivity and losing normal function in your body – and your lifestyle may be to blame.

It’s well documented… a sedentary lifestyle is dangerous to your health.  When you fail to move a body part through its full range, it becomes stiff, mechanically deficient and painful.  Every joint in your body is designed to certain functional specs.  If bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons are not routinely put through those innately determined paces, they slowly deteriorate from attrition (arthritis).  Unfortunately today’s couch potato lifestyle leads to less and less motion, and more and more unnecessary chronic suffering.

The good news is you CAN tip the scales in your favor by just adding more motion to your daily routine.  Exercises like yoga are good for maintaining the macro movements of your body, while regular adjustments maintain healthy micro movement in your spinal joints.
Keeping your body in normal alignment and motion with Chiropractic care is a perfect way to ward off the onset of sedentary pain and to help you experience more Life.

Don’t Try This at Home!

self adjusing cone

Chiropractors often get this question from patients:  ‘”…is it OK to ‘adjust’ your own spine?” (usually asked after seeing a friend or family member crank their neck from side to side, trying to get it to pop).  Well, the answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Just considering the subluxation analysis, palpation skill, radiographic interpretation, instrumentation reading, line of drive consideration, force quotients, contact points, vertebral level selection, contra-indication assessment, knowledge of family history, patient positioning, breath control, purpose, intent and timing that goes into delivering a single, healing thrust – you’d be insane to think you could do that safely and effectively to another human being without years of post graduate work and clinical training, let alone yourself.  Sure it may look simple, but there’s a lot more going on during a specific, loving, Chiropractic ADJUSTMENT than what meets the eye.

No respectable Chiropractor would try to adjust their own spine, just like no Dentist would ever try to give him or herself a root canal – that’s best left to a well trained, capable set of hands that can do the job objectively.  If you know someone who insist on habitually ‘adjusting’ their own spine, tell them to be safe and leave that to the professionals – or else we’ll have to put a cone on them.

Hammering a Subluxation

Spinal reset popup

If you hit your thumb with a
hammer, with a little TLC and
time, it will heal.  But if you insist on
hitting that same thumb over and over again, despite the best
therapeutic
efforts, the healing won’t ‘take’ because of the repeating
trauma.

Likewise, it’s common for patients to have
recurring vertebral subluxations (mis-alignment of spinal segments that
lead to
nerve irritation) even after receiving the best Chiropractic
care.  In many situations, it’s not the care in the
Chiropractor’s office that is lacking, but the repetitive Lifestyle
habits
OUTSIDE the office that becomes the causative offense.  For
example: You get adjusted, go home and
fall asleep on the couch – then RESUBLUXATE… Or you get adjusted, go
home and
eat garbage food – then RESUBLUXATE… The resubluxating cycle will
continue as
long as you fail to stop ‘hammering your thumb.’

Life generates enough subluxating stress without
you adding to it.  If you’re not holding
your adjustments well, maybe something in your lifestyle needs to be
addressed.  Discuss it with your
Chiropractor so the insulting, repetitive ‘subluxator’ can be isolated.

Back to Factory Settings

Spinal reset popup

Have you ever had to factory reset an electronic device that went haywire?  You can usually hit a ‘restore’ button to get it running like it did out of the box.  If you’ve ever felt like your body could use a ‘factory reset,’ there’s a profession dedicated for that exact purpose.

Our bodies are bombarded with daily stress.  Urgent work deadlines, unexpected family crisis or any inconvenient change in your routine are unsolicited stresses that can throw the balance of your nerve system off.  The result – your body slows down, runs sluggish and can even “freeze up” with an illness.  A Chiropractic adjustment is like hitting the reset button to restore your physiologic functions back to the Creator’s factory settings after a stress insult.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, maybe it’s time for a good adjustment to reset your nerve system back to its default health
and vitality settings.  Clearing nasty Subluxations from your spine will get you running ‘out of the box’ new again.
